Noach (Bereshit 9:8 -9:17) –

8 And God said to Noach, and to his sons with him, saying:
9 ‘As for Me, here, I now set up [establish] my covenant with you, and with your seed [children] after you;
10 and with all living creatures that are with you, the fowl, herd-animals, and all the wildlife of the earth with you;  with all those going out of the Ark, of all the living things on the earth.

11  I will establish my covenant with you; never again shall all flesh be cut off again by waters of a flood; never again shall there be a flood, to destroy the earth!

12 And God said: ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I set between me and you and all living creatures that are with you, for all ages to come:

13 My bow, I set in the cloud, so that it shall serve as a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth.

14 And when I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow is seen, in the clouds

15  I will remember my covenant, which is between me and you and all living creatures of all flesh; so the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy all flesh.

16 When the bow will be, in the cloud; I will see it, and remember the covenant between God and all living creatures – all flesh that is on the earth

17 And God said to Noach: ‘This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between me and all flesh that is upon the earth.’

18 And the sons of Noach, that went out from the Ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan.

1. And God blessed Noach and his sons, and
said to them: ‘Be fruitful and multiply [be
many], and fill the earth.
2. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall
be upon all the wildlife of the earth, and upon
all the fowl of the heavens, and all that crawl
on the soil, and all the fish of the sea – into
your hand are they given.
 3. All things crawling about that live, for you
shall they be, for eating, as with the green
plants, I now give you all of it.
4. However – flesh with its life, its blood, you
shall not eat.
5. And for your blood, of your own lives, I will
demand satisfaction – from all wild animals
I will demand it, and from humankind, from
every man regarding his brother, will I
demand satisfaction for human life.
6. Whoever now sheds human blood, for that
human shall his [own] blood be shed, for in
Elohim’s image he made humankind
7. As for you – bear fruit and be many, swarm
the earth and become many on it.

A note about the text and translation

Some of this translation is a little different that you might be familiar with – it is a combination of the standard JPS translation and Everrett Fox’s translation. I have preferred Everrett Fox where possible as it both uses (i) a more child-accessible vocabulary (e.g.; ‘dome’ instead of ‘firmament’) and (ii) attends to the Hebrew poetics and connotations of the verses ( ‘And there was a setting and a dawning, One day’ rather than ‘ And there was morning and there was evening, one day’).  In some cases I have gone with JPS because of its familiarity. (e.g.; “In the beginning God created the Heaven and the earth” (JPS) rather than “At the beginning of God’s creating of the heavens and the earth” (Fox) which is closer to Rashi’s reading of the text.

1 In the beginning, God created, the heavens and the earth.

2 And the earth was unformed and empty, and darkness was over the face of the deep; and the spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

3 And God said: ‘Let there be light’ And there was light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness.

5 And God called the light ‘Day’, and the darkness He called ‘Night’. And there was a setting and there was dawning. One day.

6 And God said: ‘Let there be a dome [firmament –a vault or arch] in the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.’

7 And God made the dome, and divided the waters which were under the dome from the waters which were above the dome; and it was so.

8 And God called the dome ‘Heaven’. And there was a setting and there was dawning, a second day.

9 And God said: ‘Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together in one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so.

10 And God called the dry land ‘Earth’, and the gathering of the waters ‘Seas’; and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said: ‘Let the earth sprout forth sprouting growth, plants with seeds put forth seeds, and fruit-trees yielding fruit, of their kind, in which are their seeds, upon the earth.’ And it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth sprouting growth, plants with seeds brought forth seed of their kinds, and trees that bear fruit, in which there are seeds of their kind,; and God saw that it was good.

13 And there was a setting and there was dawning, a third day.

14 And God said: ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the heaven, to separate the day from the night; that they may be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years;

15 and let them be for lights in the dome of the heaven to give light upon the earth.’ And it was so.

16 And God made the two great lights: the greater light for ruling the day, and the lesser light for ruling the night; and the stars.

17 And God placed  them in the dome of the heavens to provide light upon the earth,

18 and to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good.

19 And there was a setting and there was dawning, a fourth day.

20 And God said: ‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let fowl fly above the earth across the open dome of heaven.’

21 And God created the great sea-serpents, and all living creatures that crawl about, with which the waters swarmed, after their kind, and all  winged fowl after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying: ‘Bear fruit, and be many, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl be many on the earth.’

23 And there was a setting and there was dawning, a fifth day.

24 And God said: ‘Let the earth bring forth living creatures after their kind, herd animals, and crawling  things, and the wildlife of the earth after their kind.’ And it was so.

25 And God made the wildlife of the earth after their kind, and the herd animals after their kind, and all the crawling things of the soil  after their kind; and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said: ‘Let us make human beings in our image, after our likeness; and let them have command over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heavens, animals,, and all the earth, and all crawling things that crawl about on the earth.’

27 And God created human beings in God’s own image, in the image of God they were created; male and female,  they were created.

28 And God blessed them; and God said to them: ‘Be fruitful, and be many, and fill the earth, and bring it under your control [subdue it]; and have command over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the heavens, and all living things that crawl upon the earth.’

29 And God said: ‘Here, I give you all plants that  bear seeds, that are upon the face of all the earth, and all trees, in which there is fruit of the tree  that bears seeds—for you they shall be for eating.

30 and also for all the living things of the earth, for all the fowl of the heavens, and to all that crawls about upon the earth, in which there is a living soul, [I have given] all green plants for eating.’ And it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And there was a setting and there was dawning the sixth day.

2:1 And so they were finished, the heavens and the earth with all they contained.

2 And God had finished, on the seventh day, his work that he had made; and the he ceased, on the seventh day, from all the work which he had made.

3 And God blessed the seventh day, and made it holy; for on it God had ceased from all his work, that by creating, God had made.

4 These were the generations of the heavens and the earth, their being created….

1 And Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying: ‘Keep all the commandments which I command you this day.

2 And it will be – on the day when you shall pass over the Jordan, into the land which the LORD your God has given you – that you shall set up great stones for yourselves, and plaster them with plaster.

3 And you will write on them all the words of this law, when you have passed over [the river]; that you may go into the land which the LORD your God has given you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of your fathers, has promised you.

4 And it shall be, when you have passed over the Jordan, that you will set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount Ebal, and you shalt plaster them with plaster.

5 And there you shall build an altar to the LORD your God, an altar of stones; you shalt not lift up any iron tools [in making] them.

6 You will build the altar of the LORD your God out of unhewn stones; and you shall offer burnt-offerings on them to the LORD your God.

7 And you shall sacrifice peace-offerings, and eat there; and you will rejoice before the LORD your God.

8 And you will write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.

9 And Moses and the priests the Levites spoke to all Israel, saying: ‘Keep silence, and hear, O Israel; this day you have become a people to the LORD your God.

10 You shall listen to the voice of the LORD your God, and do His commandments and His statutes, which I command you this day.’

Devarim 25:7-9 דברים

7. If a man is discovered kidnapping any person from among his brothers, of the children of Israel, and treats him as a slave and sells him, that thief shall die so that you shall clear out the evil from among you. 8. Be cautious regarding the lesion of tzara’ath, to observe – carefully and exactly – all that the Levite priests instruct you to do; as I have commanded them, [so shall you] observe to do.

9. Remember what the Lord, your God, did to Miriam on the way, when you went out of Egypt.

10. When you lend your fellow [Jew] any item, you shall not enter his home to take his security.

11. You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you are extending the loan shall bring the security to you outside.

1 And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman.

2 And they said: ‘Has the LORD indeed spoken only with Moses? has He not also spoken with us?’ And the LORD heard it.

3 Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men that were upon the face of the earth.

4 And the LORD spoke suddenly to Moses, and to Aaron, and to Miriam: ‘Come out, the three of you, to the tent of meeting.’ And the three of them came out.

5 And the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forth.

6 And He said: ‘Hear now My words: if there is a prophet among you, I the LORD  make Myself known to him in a vision, I speak with him in a dream.

  7 My servant Moses is not like this; he is trusted in all My house;

8 with him I speak mouth to mouth, even in a way that is perceived by the senses , and not in dark speeches [riddles]; and the image [likeness] of the LORD he sees; so why are you not afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses?’

9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and He departed.

10 And when the cloud was removed from over the Tent, behold, Miriam she was with tzara’at [she was leprous], as white as snow; and Aaron looked upon Miriam; and, behold, she had Tzara’at [she was leprous].

11 And Aaron said to Moses: ‘Oh my lord, do not – please – place sin upon us because  we have acted foolishly, and in doing so, have sinned.

12 Let her not, I pray, be as one dead, of whom  the flesh is half consumed when he comes out of his mother’s womb.’

13 And Moses cried to the LORD, saying: ‘Heal her now, O God, I beseech You.’

14 And the LORD said to Moses: ‘If her father had spat in her face, should she not hide in shame seven days? let her be  isolated [shut up]outside the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.’

15 And Miriam was isolated outside the camp seven days; and the people did not continue their journeyed until Miriam was brought in again.
